Mark Cuban found himself in the middle of a fiery social media exchange this week after a former Mavericks employee publicly criticized him. The employee, Gavin Mulloy, who served as the team’s event and marketing director from 2019 to 2024, posted on Facebook that Cuban “should be run out of Dallas.” What followed was a rare and candid back-and-forth that shed light on Cuban’s frustrations and his perspective on his tenure with the Mavericks.
Mulloy’s post, which quickly gained traction online, accused Cuban of mishandling the franchise by hiring General Manager Nico Harrison and selling the team to the Adelson family in 2023. Mulloy’s criticism seemed to echo the sentiments of many Mavericks fans who have been vocal about their dissatisfaction with the team’s recent decisions, including the controversial trade of Luka Dončić to the Los Angeles Lakers earlier this year.
Rather than ignoring the post, Cuban chose to respond directly in the comments section.
“Hey Gavin Mulloy, how much of a bonus did you get when I sold [the team]?”
Cuban wrote, referencing the bonuses he reportedly gave to Mavericks employees following the $3.5 billion sale of the franchise. Cuban didn’t stop there, defending his 23-year tenure as majority owner and highlighting the financial sacrifices he made to keep ticket prices low and the team competitive.
“You didn’t say a word when [the money] showed up in your account, did you? Sure looked good when we made it to the Finals, didn’t it?” Cuban fired back. “I did every damn thing I could for 23 years. Kept prices lower than not only any NBA team but lower than college teams too. Lost hundreds of millions of dollars. And you kept on collecting your salary.”
Cuban’s comments also revealed his lingering frustrations over the circumstances of his departure from the Mavericks. He reiterated that he had expected to retain control of basketball operations after the sale but was ultimately sidelined by the new ownership group.
“I fully expected to run basketball. The NBA wouldn’t let me put it in the contract. They took it out,” Cuban wrote,
adding that he had trusted the Adelson family to honor their verbal commitment to keep him involved.
The exchange highlighted Cuban’s discontent with the current state of the franchise and his belief that he has been unfairly blamed for decisions made after his departure.
“I honestly got tired of the growing number of fans who became pricks on social media. People exactly like you,” Cuban wrote, addressing Mulloy directly. “I didn’t want my kids and family to have to deal with people like you. That’s why I sold.”
