Memphis Grizzlies General Manager Zach Kleiman has publicly addressed speculation surrounding the recent firing of head coach Taylor Jenkins, asserting that the decision was entirely his own and not influenced by star player Ja Morant or any other members of the team. The announcement, made during a brief media session, comes amid swirling rumors about player dissatisfaction and the timing of the move, which has left many in the basketball world stunned.

The Grizzlies announced Jenkins’ dismissal just nine games before the end of the regular season, a surprising move given the team’s solid 44-29 record and playoff positioning. Kleiman, who has been at the helm of the Grizzlies’ front office since 2019, emphasized that the decision was made in the best interest of the team.

“Urgency is a core principle of ours,” Kleiman said. “I came to the conclusion that this is in the best interest of the team, and we push forward with this group.”

Kleiman also clarified that players were not consulted before the decision was made.

“The players were not consulted on this decision. This decision is mine and mine only,” he stated,

directly addressing rumors that Morant’s dissatisfaction with offensive schemes played a role in Jenkins’ firing.

Taylor Jenkins, who was hired by Kleiman in 2019, leaves as the winningest coach in franchise history, with a 250-214 regular-season record. Despite his success, the Grizzlies have struggled in the playoffs, winning only one series during his tenure. Recent struggles, including a 9-13 slide since the All-Star break, may have contributed to Kleiman’s decision to make a change.

There have been reports suggesting that Morant was unhappy with the team’s shift toward a motion-based offense, which required him to play off the ball more frequently. However, Kleiman reiterated that the decision was not influenced by player complaints and took full responsibility for the move.

Assistant coach Tuomas Iisalo has been named interim head coach and will lead the team through the remainder of the season and into the playoffs. Kleiman expressed confidence in Iisalo’s ability to provide “clarity of direction” despite the limited time to implement changes.

“Looking forward to seeing what he is able to do with this group,” Kleiman said.

As the Grizzlies prepare for their playoff run, the decision to part ways with Jenkins raises questions about the team’s long-term strategy and leadership. While Kleiman has taken full accountability for the move, the timing and circumstances surrounding the firing will likely remain a topic of debate among fans and analysts.
