Toronto Raptors star Scottie Barnes has made headlines for his incredible act of generosity, donating $50,000 to prevent Polkadots Playland and Montessori Academy, a private school in Brampton, Ontario, from shutting its doors.

The school, which provides specialized programs for children, including those with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), was facing imminent closure due to financial struggles exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Polkadots Playland and Montessori Academy had been battling mounting debt, with $90,000 owed to its landlord and a looming deadline of March 31 to pay off the balance. The school launched a GoFundMe campaign to raise $80,000, appealing to the community for help. Principal Josette Drummond described the situation as dire, emphasizing the importance of the school’s programs for children in pre-kindergarten through Grade 6.

The campaign gained traction after local media outlets and journalist Brandon Gonez highlighted the school’s plight. Donations began pouring in, but it was Barnes’ contribution that ultimately pushed the school past its fundraising goal.

Barnes, moved by the story, stepped in with a $50,000 donation, ensuring the school could remain open. According to Drummond, Barnes’ team reached out after learning about the school’s situation.

“I got that phone call from someone on his team, and she just expressed that he came across the story, and he was moved by it, and wants to help… beyond words, like a literal miracle,” Drummond said.

Barnes’ donation was not only generous but also timely, as his team worked to ensure the funds were delivered before the landlord’s deadline. Drummond praised Barnes for his actions, calling him a “remarkable young man” and highlighting his character.

“This is definitely something he didn’t have to do. The fact that he not only felt for us but put actions behind that feeling and such significant actions at that, I think, is really just a testament of the remarkable young man he is.”

The donation has reignited hope within the community, allowing Polkadots to continue its mission of providing quality education and support for children. Parents and staff rallied to help the school during its time of need, volunteering their time and resources to keep operations running.

Drummond expressed her gratitude to Barnes and the community, saying,

“The sense of community, the sense of connectedness that I feel… We are truly a family, and that joy to be able to just continue what we’ve been doing and what they appreciate and value so much has just been the best feeling for everybody.”

As Polkadots Playland and Montessori Academy moves forward, Barnes’ contribution will undoubtedly be remembered- the difference one person can make.
