After more than two decades of unforgettable calls and commentary, Bill Schoening, the iconic radio voice of the San Antonio Spurs, has announced his retirement at the end of the 2024-25 NBA season. Schoening’s final broadcast will take place on April 13, 2025, when the Spurs face the Toronto Raptors, marking the end of an extraordinary career that has spanned 24 seasons and 2,280 consecutive games.
Schoening joined the Spurs in 2001, becoming the play-by-play announcer for WOAI 1200 AM. Over the years, his voice became synonymous with the franchise, guiding fans through some of the most memorable moments in Spurs history. From the dominance of the “Big Three”—Tim Duncan, Manu Ginobili, and Tony Parker—to the team’s four championship victories during his tenure, Schoening’s broadcasts captured the essence of Spurs basketball.
Before his time with the Spurs, Schoening had already built an impressive resume, spending 12 years as the radio play-by-play announcer for the University of Texas. His career also included stints calling games for the NFL, MLB, and arena football, showcasing his versatility and passion for sports broadcasting.

Schoening’s dedication to his craft earned him numerous accolades, including four Associated Press “Top Texas Play-by-Play Awards” and the title of Texas Sportscaster of the Year in 2014. In 2022, he was inducted into the Texas Radio Hall of Fame, cementing his status as one of the industry’s greats.
Reflecting on his career, Schoening expressed gratitude for the opportunity to be part of the Spurs family.
“It’s difficult to walk away from a job that has provided so many fond memories and spawned many meaningful relationships, but it’s time for me to step away from full-time broadcasting and pursue some other interests like mentorship, volunteer work, and time with family,” he said.
