Miami Heat forward Kevin Love has announced the passing of his father, Stan Love, a former NBA player, through a deeply emotional tribute shared on Instagram.
Stan Love, who was 76 years old, had been battling a debilitating illness for several months. Kevin, who has been away from the Heat during the playoffs due to personal reasons, revealed the news on Sunday night, offering a glimpse into the profound impact his father had on his life.
Stan Love, a standout player at the University of Oregon, was selected ninth overall in the 1971 NBA Draft by the Baltimore Bullets. Over his professional career, he played for the Bullets, Los Angeles Lakers, and San Antonio Spurs, leaving his mark on both the NBA and ABA. Beyond basketball, Stan was also known as the brother of Beach Boys singer Mike Love.
In his tribute, Kevin Love reflected on his father’s strength and the lessons he imparted.
“Dad, you fought for a long time. The hardest stretch being these past 6 months. The most painful to witness being these last few weeks. And even at the end as you continued to deteriorate – I still saw you as a Giant. My Protector. My first Hero,” Kevin wrote.
He went on to express gratitude for the values his father instilled in him, including respect, kindness, humor, and ambition.
Kevin also acknowledged the complexities of their relationship, sharing that their differences ultimately led to personal growth and reconciliation.
“Over the years my Dad and I had our differences. I mourn the times I felt angry and isolated – my heart weighs heavy knowing we lost that time and can’t get it back. But our division led to me finding myself,” he wrote.
