Dwight Howard And Stan Van Gundy’s All-Time Most Incredibly Uncomfortable Interview
In April of 2005, a report about Dwight Howard wanting to have the coaching staff around head coach Stan Van Gundy fired, was made public. Following this report, the most uncomfortable, yet most awesome interview session took place.
Van Gundy was asked about Dwight Howard trying to get him fired and said,
“I know he has. That’s just the way it is. Again, I’ve been dealing with that all year. It’s not anything real bothersome. You go out and do your job. I was told it was true by management, right from the top.”
Coach Van Gundy then proceeded to explain that he didn’t have a problem with the situation, saying that not everyone can be or is happy with their bosses. The only thing he did have a problem with was bullshit.
“To me, since everything came out yesterday, I’ll be honest. You know you’re gonna get asked and you think about how you’re gonna respond and the whole thing, and… The only thing I’m ever uncomfortable with is bullshit. Some people have a hard time with that, I guess.”
Moments later, Howard appeared next to Van Gundy, put his arm around his coach and, unaware of what Van Gundy had just admitted, continued to deny that he had made such a request.
Dwight: “Yeah Stan, we’re not worried about, right?”
Stan: “That’s what I just said.”
Dwight: “Yeah, what’s our main concern right now?”
Stan: “We have to stop Carmelo Anthony and the New York Knicks tonight.”
Dwight: “And the New York Knicks. That’s the plan, right?”
Stan: “That is the plan. That’s what I just said.”
Dwight: “Is Dave Ping here today? The guy who started this BS?”
Stan: “I don’t see Ping here.”
Dwight: “Me neither.”
Stan: “Are you guys done with, uh, me?”
Van Gundy then left and Howard continued to deny it, thinking he’s superior to the reporters, until they explained to him that his coach just confirmed the rumors. This is so uncomfortably genius, I can watch it again over and over.
