Charles Barkley Recalls Funny Story About Larry Bird Feeling Disrespected Due To Being Guarded By A White Player
One thing that separated Larry Bird from other fierce competitors in NBA history, was his renown savagery. We always hear and talk about Michael Jordan and his ruthless trash-talking, but we surely cannot forget about Bird. The retired Boston Celtics forward probably had one of the best verbal jabs in his bag.
Bird has also ushered this millennium with his fundamentally sound game and ability to stretch the floor as a forward before it was even popular. Facing a player his caliber was a matchup nightmare for any opposing team. Naturally, teams put their most reputable defensive player to take on the defensive task to contain a high-caliber NBA player. Anything less than that could’ve been disrespectful to the latter.
And being disrespectful is something Larry Legend wouldn’t acknowledge. Charles Barkley recalled a funny and interesting story in which Bird was cursing during the game because he felt being disrespected.
“I remember he was cursing under his breath, and I asked Larry what’s going on with you? He says “You guys are being disrespectful to me.” I say what are you talking about. He says “You guys are putting a white guy on me. That’s disrespectful.”
