The San Antonio Spurs are having a tough season, with a record that ties them with the Washington Wizards as the second-worst team in the NBA. They’ve won only 4 games and lost 20, just doing slightly better than the Detroit Pistons, who have a 2-24 record.
To be fair, nobody expected the Spurs to be a playoff team this season. The Western Conference is loaded with talented teams, and the Spurs are a young team with players still trying to find their way in the NBA. Even so, there’s talk about whether the Spurs should do something about their losing situation this season.
Besides their current losing record, the conversation is largely influenced by the dominance of No.1 overall pick Victor Wembanyama. The French standout, averaging 19.0 points, 10.9 rebounds and 2.9 blocks per game on 43.5% shooting, has many fans wondering if the Spurs should accelerate their rebuild and form a competitive team around him.
As the discussion grows, Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich was asked whether he expects the Spurs to get active in the trade market to improve the team. The veteran coach answered by showing considerable skepticism in his response.
“No, I doubt it,” he said at his pre-game news conference. “Why would we do that? Get a vet or two and go win a championship this year? I’m going to go think about that.”
