In a recent appearance on the Club520 Podcast, Golden State Warriors’ forward Draymond Green shared his candid thoughts on young NBA players venturing into the podcasting world prematurely. Green, known for his outspoken nature both on and off the court, didn’t hold back his opinions, stating, “Nobody really wants to hear from you”.
Draymond Green launched his own podcast, “The Draymond Green Show,” in May 2022, after securing three NBA championships. His podcast quickly gained popularity, thanks to his unique insights and candid interviews with some of the biggest names in basketball. However, Green believes that young players should focus on establishing their careers on the court before diving into the world of podcasting.
Green’s main concern is that young players might be spreading themselves too thin by trying to juggle their budding basketball careers with podcasting. He emphasized that while he appreciates the initiative, he feels that many of these players haven’t yet proven themselves in the league.
“For some of these guys, they be in year three, still trying to figure it out, with a podcast,” Green said. “I love that you’re doing it, I love that you found something that you want to do, but you in year three and ain’t done s–t. Nobody really wants to hear from you”.
Green’s comments highlight the delicate balance that professional athletes must maintain between their on-court responsibilities and off-court ventures. He pointed out that while it’s great to have interests outside of basketball, it’s crucial to ensure that these pursuits don’t interfere with their primary job—playing basketball.
“I get a little worried that people be trying to do too much too soon,” Green added.
Ultimately, Green’s message to young players is one of patience and focus. He doesn’t believe that players need to win multiple championships before starting a podcast, but he does think they should have a solid foundation in their basketball careers first.
“Make sure that you’re in the space to do it first,” Green advised. “I see some guys starting now, and if you start now because you’re trying to make that your main job, great. Go for it. But you’re not in a space right now to do that and try to make it in basketball because you ain’t made it in that yet”.
Draymond Green’s critique serves as a reminder of the importance of prioritizing one’s primary career before branching out into other ventures. While his comments may come off as harsh, they stem from a place of experience and a desire to see young players succeed both on and off the court.
