In a recent episode of the “7PM in Brooklyn with Carmelo Anthony & Kid Mero” podcast, NBA legend Carmelo Anthony shared his insights on why Devin Booker excelled with Team USA during the 2024 Paris Olympics, while Jayson Tatum faced challenges. Anthony’s analysis sheds light on the contrasting performances of these two NBA stars and offers a deeper understanding of the dynamics within the team.
Devin Booker, a key player for the Phoenix Suns, thrived in his role with Team USA, contributing significantly to their gold medal victory. According to Anthony, Booker’s success stemmed from his willingness to adapt and accept a role that differed from his usual position in the NBA. Booker embraced the responsibilities of a complementary two-way player, fitting seamlessly alongside superstars like Steph Curry, LeBron James, Kevin Durant, and Joel Embiid.
Anthony highlighted Booker’s college experience as a crucial factor in his adaptability. At the University of Kentucky, Booker came off the bench in all 38 games during his freshman season, which prepared him for the role he played with Team USA. This background made him more comfortable with earning his minutes and working hard to contribute to the team’s success.
In contrast, Jayson Tatum, fresh off his first NBA championship with the Boston Celtics, struggled to find his footing with Team USA. Despite high expectations, Tatum’s performance was limited, and he appeared in only four of the six games, averaging 5.3 points, 5.3 rebounds, and 1.5 assists per game¹. His shooting percentages were also below par, and he failed to make a single three-pointer.
Anthony pointed out that Tatum’s challenges were partly due to a lack of clear communication regarding his role. The coaching staff, led by Steve Kerr, wanted Tatum to play a role similar to Booker’s, acting as a stretch four and spacing the court. However, Tatum may not have been fully prepared or willing to accept this role, leading to his struggles on the court.
Anthony emphasized the importance of clear communication and role definition within a team. He believed that Tatum’s difficulties could have been mitigated with better communication from the coaching staff. Understanding and accepting one’s role is crucial for any player, especially in a star-studded lineup like Team USA’s.
Carmelo Anthony on the Difference between Devin Booker and Jayson Tatum:
“He had to change his role and he killed it. He was the unsung MVP, but I think Jayson wasn’t ready to accept his role.”
