The Houston Rockets family is mourning the loss of Carroll Dawson, a beloved figure who served the team with distinction for nearly three decades. Dawson, affectionately known as “CD,” passed away on September 9, 2024, at the age of 86.
Dawson’s career with the Rockets began in 1980 when he joined as an assistant coach. Over the next 17 years, he played a pivotal role in guiding the team to four NBA Finals appearances, including back-to-back championships in 1994 and 1995. His contributions were instrumental in shaping the careers of stars like Hakeem Olajuwon and Ralph Sampson.
In 1997, Dawson transitioned to the role of general manager, where he continued to leave an indelible mark on the franchise. Under his leadership, the Rockets acquired key players such as Charles Barkley, Steve Francis, Yao Ming, and Tracy McGrady. Dawson’s tenure as GM saw the team make six playoff appearances and achieve a record of 461-409.
Dawson’s influence extended beyond the NBA. He also served as the general manager of the WNBA’s Houston Comets, leading the team to four consecutive championships from 1997 to 2000.
While Dawson’s professional achievements were remarkable, it was his character that truly stood out. Known for his kindness, wisdom, and infectious humor, Dawson was a beloved figure both on and off the court. Rockets owner Tilman Fertitta expressed his condolences, stating,
“CD’s kindness, wisdom, and passion for the sport touched everyone around him and his impact on our organization was immeasurable”.
Dawson’s legacy will forever be honored with his banner hanging from the rafters of the Toyota Center, alongside other Rockets legends. His contributions to the sport and his uplifting spirit will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
Our heartfelt condolences go out to Dawson’s wife, Sharon, and all his loved ones during this difficult time.
