The NBA has never been more fun. You’ve got veterans like LeBron James, Kevin Durant, and Stephen Curry still dominating the league, a wave of international stars like Victor Wembanyama, Luka Doncic, and Nikola Jokic making their mark, and promising young stars like Anthony Edwards and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander ready to take over. Parity is also thriving, with six different champions in the last six years.
That being said, the NBA, for all its growth, faces its fair share of criticism. For some, it’s the level of competition that raises eyebrows. Critics cite everything from players forming friendships to players forming superteams, to soft officiating and flashier plays. And former Lakers guard Derek Fisher thinks the league has shifted toward being more of an entertainment product.
While entertainment has always been a core aspect of the NBA, it’s safe to say Fisher isn’t thrilled with the league’s current direction. In a recent interview, he went as far as comparing the NBA to the WWE.
“You listen to guys that played before, coached before. It’s a different game. And it’s not a negative thing. It’s just built more for the entertainment value, maybe, than the competitive value.”
