The Phoenix Suns and the broader basketball community are mourning the loss of Al McCoy, the legendary radio play-by-play announcer who passed away peacefully at the age of 91. Known as the “Voice of the Suns,” McCoy’s career spanned over five decades, making him the longest-tenured team broadcaster in NBA history.
Al McCoy began his journey with the Phoenix Suns on September 27, 1972, and his distinctive voice quickly became synonymous with the team. Over the years, he called some of the most memorable moments in Suns history, including three trips to the NBA Finals. His iconic catchphrases like “Shazam!” for a three-pointer and “Heartbreak Hotel” for a missed shot or loss, became beloved by fans.
McCoy’s contributions to sports broadcasting were widely recognized. He received the Curt Gowdy Media Award from the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame in 2007, was the first play-by-play announcer inducted into the Arizona Broadcasters Hall of Fame in 2004, and was inducted into the Arizona Sports Hall of Fame in 2009. In 2017, he earned the highest honor from the Suns, becoming the 15th person inducted into the Suns Ring of Honor.
Born on April 26, 1933, in Williams, Iowa, McCoy’s passion for radio broadcasting began at a young age. His first radio job came in 1951 in Webster City, Iowa, while he was a freshman at Drake University. He moved to Arizona in 1956 to do play-by-play for the Triple-A Phoenix Giants baseball club, a move that would shape his illustrious career.
McCoy was preceded in death by his wife, Georgia, a Valley artist who passed away in 2012. He is survived by his three sons, Mike, Jay, and Jerry, their wives, seven grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren.
