The Los Angeles Clippers decision to part ways with star forward Paul George reportedly related directly back to Kawhi Leonard. According to NBA insider Bill Simmons, who revealed the details on his podcast, the decision was heavily influenced by the team’s concerns over Kawhi Leonard’s lingering knee issues.

Simmons explained that the Clippers’ front office had growing doubts about Leonard’s long-term health and his ability to stay on the court consistently. Leonard, who has been dealing with knee problems for several seasons, underwent an offseason procedure to address inflammation in his surgically repaired right knee. Despite his efforts to recover, the uncertainty surrounding his condition played a significant role in the Clippers’ decision-making process.

The Clippers were reportedly hesitant to commit to George with a long-term, lucrative contract, fearing that Leonard’s knee issues could jeopardize their aspirations.

“I actually think they knew Kawhi’s knees were fu**ed, and that’s why they didn’t want to give Paul George all that money. I think that, especially when you think like he goes to the Olympic team. They kind of gently sent him packing in a couple of days, and it’s like, ‘Yeah, Kawhi’s decided to drop out.’ They fu**ing pushed his ass out…

Like they were, ‘We need 12 guys, and you cannot; you’re not in shape to play, and we don’t think you’re going to be healthy.’ It’s sad, but at the same time, he won a title and made a ton of money. We just never got to see it for an extended stretch with the Clippers”.

Leonard, who played in 68 games last season—the most since 2017—has been working diligently to strengthen his knee and prepare for the new season. However, his knee issues flared up during the playoffs, limiting his participation and contributing to the Clippers’ early exit.

As the Clippers navigate this transitional period, fans and analysts alike will be watching closely to see how the team adapts to these changes.
