Utah Jazz star Lauri Markkanen recently addressed the persistent trade rumors involving the Golden State Warriors during an interview with NBA insider Marc Stein. Markkanen, who has been a standout player for the Jazz, shared his thoughts on the speculation and how he handled the situation.

Markkanen acknowledged that being the subject of trade rumors was flattering and a sign that he had done things right in his career.

“I think it means you’ve done things right—that teams want you,” he said.

Despite the rumors, the forward remained focused and was able to create some emotional distance from the uncertainty.

Reflecting on his journey, Markkanen mentioned that he had experienced similar situations before, such as his move from Chicago to Cleveland during his restricted free agency.

“I was able to go home to my family and hang out,” he said. “I knew that, if something happens with trade interest, my agent will let me know. So I was able to kind of be home with my family and work out and it was easier.”

The trade rumors were put to rest when Markkanen signed a five-year, $238 million extension with the Jazz on August 7, 2024. This move effectively ended the Warriors’ pursuit of him and secured his future with the Jazz through the 2028-29 season.

“Contract-wise we couldn’t do anything before August,” Markkanen explained. “I was able to kind of zone it out and really wait for my agent for what’s real”

With his contract extension in place, Markkanen is now focused on the upcoming season and helping the Jazz achieve success. He remains grateful for the interest from other teams but is happy to continue his journey with the Jazz.
