The NBA has announced it will reopen its investigation into Los Angeles Lakers center Jaxson Hayes following the release of new security footage from a 2021 incident involving Hayes and his then-girlfriend, Sofia Jamora.
The video, published by TMZ, sheds additional light on the altercation and has prompted the league to take another look at the case.
The footage shows Hayes, who was then playing for the New Orleans Pelicans, in a heated argument with Jamora. At one point, Hayes appears to pull Jamora out of a room, and she can be heard saying,
“Stop. Let go of me.”
The argument continues outside, where Jamora accuses Hayes of physical abuse, to which he responds dismissively before spitting in her direction. The police were called to the scene, and Hayes was arrested and later sentenced to probation, community service, and domestic violence classes.

Despite these legal repercussions, the NBA did not impose any disciplinary action on Hayes at the time. However, the newly released footage has prompted the league to reconsider its stance. NBA spokesman Mike Bass confirmed the reopening of the investigation, emphasizing the league’s no-tolerance policy on domestic violence.
Hayes’ spokesperson stated that they will continue to cooperate with the NBA during the investigation. The situation has also led to a new lawsuit filed by Jamora’s attorneys, alleging improper interactions between Hayes’ attorneys and a police officer involved in the arrest.
Hayes, who joined the Lakers in 2023, is currently averaging 5.0 points and 4.2 rebounds per game. The reopening of the investigation raises questions about his future with the team, as any potential disciplinary action could impact his playing time and career.
