When Stevie Wonder Praised Carmelo Anthony: “I Love Watching You Play”

During the 2011 NBA All-Star Game in Los Angeles, music legend Stevie Wonder hilariously told Carmelo Anthony, “I love watching you play.”

Anthony shared the story on his podcast, “7PM in Brooklyn,” where he described how Stevie Wonder was allowed into the locker room to meet the players. As Wonder made his way around the room, he shook Anthony’s hand and said,

“I love watching you play.”

Anthony and his co-hosts couldn’t help but burst out laughing at the unexpected compliment, given Wonder’s blindness since birth.

Despite the obvious contradiction, Anthony insisted that the interaction occurred just as he described.

Wonder, known for his incredible musical talent and good-natured personality, seems to be a good sport about all the celebrity stories involving him. Anthony’s recounting of the encounter has added to the growing collection of amusing anecdotes about the legendary singer.

However, this story might add some more fuel to Shaquille O’Neal’s wild claims. During an Inside the NBA show in 2019, O’Neal shared an interesting story about an encounter with Stevie Wonder, that made him become one of the very few people who believe Stevie Wonder can actually see.

“We lived in a building on Wiltshire. I’m coming through the lobby and the door opens. It’s Stevie Wonder. He comes in and says ‘What’s up, Shaq? How you doin’, big dog?’ He presses the button, gets off on his floor, buys something and goes to his room. I went and called every person I knew. They didn’t believe me.”
