The Minnesota Timberwolves’ long-standing struggle in Toronto reached a new milestone on Thursday night as they fell to the Toronto Raptors 110-105 at Scotiabank Arena.
This loss marks the Timberwolves’ 20th consecutive defeat in Toronto, dating back to January 21, 2004. The last time the Timberwolves won in Toronto, Kevin Garnett was on his way to an MVP season, and Sam Cassell, Latrell Sprewell, Trenton Hassell, and Ervin Johnson were key players in the lineup.
Despite a valiant effort from Anthony Edwards, who scored 26 points, and Julius Randle, who added 23 points and nine rebounds, the Timberwolves couldn’t overcome a late-game surge by the Raptors. Toronto outscored Minnesota 33-26 in the fourth quarter, with RJ Barrett leading the charge with 31 points, including 12 in the final quarter.
Head coach Chris Finch acknowledged the difficulty of the situation, saying,
“We haven’t been able to generate a lot of consistent offense without Mike Conley, and tonight was another example of that.”
Conley, who was sidelined with a left toe sprain, was sorely missed as the Timberwolves struggled to find their rhythm.
The Raptors, despite their own injury woes, managed to capitalize on the Timberwolves’ defensive lapses and secure the win. Scottie Barnes, making his return from injury, contributed 17 points and six assists, while Chris Boucher added 22 points off the bench.
As the Timberwolves look to break their losing streak, they’ll need to focus on improving their consistency and finding ways to win on the road. The next game against the Boston Celtics, where they have also struggled, will be another opportunity to turn things around.
