Mason Plumlee Was Traded. Oh, and His SUV Was Broken Into. All Within an Hour.

Mason Plumlee may have had the most life changing day of his life on February 12, 2017.

Plumlee arrived to Portland Trail Blazers practice at the team’s facility extra early on Sunday morning to expedite a pressing order. After he cleared that up, Plumlee went back to his car and noticed someone had broken into his SUV and immediately checked for what was missing. His wallet and checkbook were snatched and the 6’11” big man instantly began cancelling his credit cards.

“I went early to the facility to start cancelling my checkbook, my credit cards,” said Plumlee. “And, someone said Neil [Olshey] wants to meet with you.”

Plumlee’s mind raced again. Why would the Trail Blazers’ General Manager call him in, in the midst of this dilemma?

Plumlee was greeted by Olshey and head coach Terry Stotts and told he had been traded to the Denver Nuggets in return for 22-year-old center Jusuf Nurkic and a 2017 first-round-pick.

Phone calls and texts flooded Plumlee’s phone about the move, as he attempted to reach banks—that are closed on Sundays —to freeze his cards. His first phone call was with his brother, Miles, who was traded from Milwaukee to Charlotte just two weeks ago. The two brothers discussed the changes in their careers and how they would cope with their new situations.

After the devastating fiasco, Mason Plumlee admitted how well the Portland Trail Blazers handled the trade.

“They really handled the trade in a classy manner,” Plumlee said. “They thanked me, and I thanked them. This organization has always been very good to me.”
