NBA Offseason Grades – Kings & Spurs

SACREMENTO KINGS: B+

The Summer for the Sacramento Kings was surprisingly good. After the departure of DeMarcus Cousins, the franchise has well and truly moved on by trying to accumulate young talent that will be good in the future. They drafted DeAaron Fox, who is likely to be a brilliant guard in the league, and steadied their roster with some savy veterans to go along. Vince Carter has joined the Kings as well as Zach Randolph in a nice move of veteran leadership. Vinsanity is still somehow getting the job done so he should be fun to watch in a Kings uniform. George Hill now also calls Sacramento home. His presence will be superb for Fox’s development, and he can learn a lot off the former Indiana Pacers and Utah Jazz point guard. A summer in the right direction for the organization.

SAN ANTONIO SPURS: C-

To be honest, I was very disappointed with the Spurs’ offseason for a number of reasons. They let go of some very productive talent from last season, notably Jonathon Simmons and Dewayne Dedmon. They also gave Pau Gasol way too much money for some strange reason. The best bit of business they managed was bringing in versatile wing man Rudy Gay, who will massively help them on both sides in a wing dominant league. With all the free agent talent available this summer, it was surprising the Spurs were never aggressive in their attempts to land anyone. This could spell trouble for the Spurs, who may find themselves catching up to the rest of the elite in the Western Conference as the powerhouses have improved around them. Nevertheless, the Spurs should never be counted out as they are a class organization who thrive when counted out.
