Knicks Hilariously Traded For Spurs Summer League Coach Petteri Koponen’s Draft Rights

In a funny twist during the 2024 NBA Draft, the New York Knicks acquired the draft rights to Petteri Koponen, a 36-year-old former Finnish basketball player who is now an assistant coach for the San Antonio Spurs. This move raised eyebrows, given that Koponen was originally drafted in 2007 and has never played in the NBA.

Koponen, who had a successful playing career in Europe before transitioning to coaching, responded humorously to the news on social media. He stated,

“I’m honored, but I’m still going to honor my commitment with the Spurs. Of course, a financially ridiculous offer could change things. + I got the new hip! I’m ready!”

The Knicks’ acquisition of Koponen’s draft rights was part of a trade with the Dallas Mavericks. The deal included the draft rights to Ariel Hukporti and cash considerations in exchange for the draft rights to Melvin Ajinça.

Koponen’s playful remark about a “financially ridiculous offer” and his new hip highlights his commitment to his current role with the Spurs while acknowledging the humor in the situation. His mention of the new hip suggests he recently underwent hip surgery or replacement, adding a lighthearted touch to his readiness to take on any challenge.

Petteri Koponen began his professional career in Finland and played for several top European clubs, including FC Barcelona and FC Bayern Munich. He retired from playing in 2022 and has since moved into coaching. His experience and knowledge of the game earned him a spot on Gregg Popovich’s Spurs coaching staff for the 2024 NBA Summer League.

Despite the Knicks’ unexpected move, Koponen remains focused on his coaching duties with the Spurs.
